Weekly Update
Last week, I threw around the idea of letting team members pitch AI projects during performance reviews. It was a fantastic discussion! I got to hear about a ton of exciting things we can explore—like creating AI agents and even crafting prompts. Pretty cool, right?
But let’s be real for a second—AI is just one piece of the puzzle. There’s a lot more happening behind the scenes, and it’s easy to lose sight of the foundational skills that keep everything running smoothly.
So, I thought I’d share this handy checklist with you. Whether you’re using it to stay on track or as inspiration for your roadmap and planning this year, here’s a quick breakdown of the five essential skills every rockstar tech team should have. Can you check them all off?
1. Coding Chops
Whether it’s Python, Java, or JavaScript, coding isn’t just about cranking out lines of code. It’s about turning keystrokes into powerful creations—and sometimes a bit of controlled chaos. Does your team have a strong foundation in this?
2. Cloud Know-How
Mastering cloud computing means building systems that are not only scalable but also robust. And hey, did you know your team has access to Cloud Labs? That’s a big win!
3. Data Savvy
If you're not diving deep into the data pool, are you really making informed decisions? Data is your ally! Leveraging it means fewer guesswork-based decisions. If you need a boost, check out this Skill Path: Become a Database Professional with SQL.
I admit, I geek out over tech topics. While I’m not the top expert on everything under the hood, I’m happy to take suggestions from you, and we can discuss ideas together. I’m comfortable navigating both hardcore tech (kind of) and the softer skills that keep teams moving forward.
4. Straight-Up Communication
Unless you’ve mastered telepathy, clear communication is absolutely crucial. When everyone’s on the same page, you’ll see fewer late-night Slack pings. From my experience with product and engineering teams, my advice is simple: always over-communicate. Don’t assume your point is obvious—especially when working remotely.
5. Project Management
Deadlines, deliverables, and your sanity—it’s a lot to juggle. But if you can nail project management, you’re golden. Sure, this leans more toward soft skills, but without a solid portfolio of tech projects, moving into PM can be a real challenge. Ready to dive in? Check out the projects we’ve got lined up for you.
And that’s it! I just wanted to share this list with you, whether you’re a manager looking to fuel your team’s growth or an individual working on your own skills.
Oh, and of course, I’ve sprinkled in some course links that you might find useful!
