Quick Recap
Last year, at GitHub Universe 2024, I attended a session where a top executive shared a simple yet powerful idea that has stuck with me ever since.
Each Friday, ask yourself and your team:
"What’s the one thing you learned this week?"
At first, it sounds really simple, right? But can you list two or three truly impactful things you’ve learned in the past month? Not just small tweaks or facts, but insights that have made a meaningful difference in your work?
If you can—fantastic! You’re growing, and so is your team. Because in tech, those who learn fast move fast.
But here’s the real challenge: How do you create an environment where continuous learning isn’t just encouraged but embedded in your workflow?
Make Learning Intentional
At Codeforweb, we’ve seen firsthand that the best engineering teams don’t just learn on the fly. They have structured ways to capture, reflect on, and apply their learnings.
A few practical ways to make this happen:
✅ End-of-week reflections: Reserve the last 3-5 minutes of Friday standups for each team member to share one key learning (or during your regular standup cadence). This could be technical (e.g., optimizing API calls), process-related (e.g., a better way to run retrospectives), or even personal (e.g., handling feedback more effectively).
✅ Learning logs: Create a lightweight system—whether it’s a Slack thread, Notion doc, or GitHub discussion—where developers can drop quick notes on discoveries, challenges overcome, or new best practices. Over time, this becomes an internal knowledge base. I personally use a self-thread on Slack to capture all notes and learnings.
✅ Micro-assessments: Use structured tools to identify skill gaps and track progress over time. Codeforweb’s assessments help engineers and teams benchmark their strengths and weaknesses in key technical areas.
The Teams That Learn Fast, Ship Fast
Engineering speed isn’t just about writing code quickly—it’s about how fast you adapt, solve problems, and integrate new knowledge. If you want to accelerate your team’s growth, start by making learning an intentional, continuous habit.
So, let’s bring it back to the original question:
What’s the one thing you learned this week?
